A DJ is the person who chooses and plays the recorded music, on the radio or in a place where people dance — a club, a wedding, a party. The letters stand for disc jockey: disc is an old word for a record, and jockey is a playful name for the person who “rides” those records. Today many DJs use laptops and mix two tracks together live, not only put vinyl on a turntable; hip-hop DJs may scratch. A radio DJ often talks between songs; a club DJ may barely speak and is there to keep the floor moving. It is also a verb: to DJ a party. In writing it is usually DJ, not dj. Informal everywhere; the job name everyone actually uses.
