When someone calls writing deathless, they are usually joking, and not kindly. Deathless prose, in that teasing use, is writing that is wooden, puffed-up, or so dull it feels as if it will never end. The joke sits on a straighter meaning the word also has: deathless means “that cannot die” — immortal fame, deathless verse, a name that will not fade. So “deathless prose” said with a straight face can mean writing fine enough to last; said with a twist in the voice, it means the opposite, the grand sentence that makes you wince. You will meet the jab in reviews and mock-serious comments more than in everyday talk.
