Deadwood is a small city in the Black Hills of South Dakota, in the United States. In the 1870s it was a gold-rush town, noisy and rough, and it became famous as a place of the American Old West. Wild Bill Hickok, a well-known , was shot in the back there in 1876 while he was playing cards. He and Calamity Jane, a woman famous for riding and shooting, are both buried in the cemetery above the town. People still visit for that history — and though actually, many also know the name from a television drama set there. Write it with a capital D: it is a place name, like . The name itself is simply dead + wood; the hills around the town had many dead trees. There is also a common English word deadwood, with a small d, for dead branches on a tree, or for people in a group who do no useful work. That is a different word in your head, even if it looks the same on the page.
