To de-ice something is to take the ice off it. You hear it most with cars and planes. In a cold country, ice on the blocks your view, so you spray it or it to de-ice the glass. At an airport, workers de-ice the wings of a plane before take-off, because ice on a wing can make flying unsafe; they often use a special liquid, not just a . The word is a verb: they de-ice the wings; the job is de-icing. It is ordinary, practical English — not fancy, not slang. Though actually, we often say defrost when heat melts ice or frost from the inside (a freezer, or warm air on a car window). De-ice points more at getting ice off the outside. Taiwan roads rarely need this; you will meet it in winter travel stories and in airport news.
