Dandruff is the little white or grey flakes of dead skin that come off a person’s scalp. You see them in the hair, or on the shoulders of a dark shirt. Almost everyone has a little; some people have a lot, and it . It is not dirt from outside, and it is not lice. It is skin the head has already finished with. People feel shy about it, which is why shampoo talk about it in careful voices. A special shampoo often helps more than washing harder with ordinary soap. The word is first recorded in the 1500s. The second half goes back to an old northern English word for a scab; the first half is obscure.
組成First attested in 1545. The first element is obscure (compare dander, the skin-flake sense). The second comes from a Northumbrian or East Anglian Middle English hurf, “scab,” from Old Norse hrufa.
