Dander here is someone’s temper — the heat that rises when they are insulted or pushed. You almost never meet the word standing alone in this meaning. It lives in a small, slightly old-fashioned phrase: to get someone’s dander up, meaning to make them angry. People say it with a half-smile. It is informal and often humorous, not a word for a real fight in the street. American speakers use it more than British ones. The origin of this temper sense is uncertain. There is another dander, the tiny skin flakes from animals that make some people sneeze; that is a different meaning, and it is easy to mix the two.
