The Dales is a stretch of country in northern England — mostly Yorkshire — of wide open valleys and hills. In the north, a dale is simply a valley; the Dales is those valleys treated as one place, the kind you see on walking maps and holiday posters. People go for stone walls, sheep, small towns, and long views. Though actually there is more than one set of dales (Cumbria has them too), if someone says they spent a week in the Dales they almost always mean that famous Yorkshire hill country, not 'some valleys' in general. It is a place name in everyday British talk, not a technical word.
