1. 1

A dale is a valley. In everyday English now, most people just say valley. Dale is older, and you still meet it in place names, especially in the north of England: the Yorkshire Dales, Borrowdale, Airedale. In those names it means the valley of that place or river. It is a countryside word, more at home on a map or in a poem than in a classroom geography list. You would not usually point at a valley in Taiwan and call it a dale. The English word comes from Old English for a valley.
