Dacron is a man-made cloth — a kind of . It is not grown like cotton or taken from a sheep like wool; it is made in a factory from chemicals. Because of that it is strong, it dries fast, it does not stretch out of shape, and it does not rot when it gets wet, which is why it turned up in sails for boats, in ropes, in tents and jackets, in the filling of pillows and quilts, and even inside the human body, in the tubes surgeons use to repair blood vessels. Two things to know about the word itself. First, it started as a company's brand name (DuPont), which is why you often see it written with a capital D — like or Post-it, it is one company's name for a thing that many companies now make. Second, it sounds a bit old-fashioned today; younger speakers are much more likely to just say '', and you will meet 'Dacron' mostly in sailing, in medicine, and on the labels of older clothes.
