Nylon is a strong, man-made fabric, not found in nature, used for things like , ropes, tents, and parachutes. It was one of the very first synthetic fibers ever made, developed by chemists in the 1930s. A fun 'though actually' moment: a lot of people guess that the name 'nylon' comes from combining 'New York' and 'London' (NY + LON) — but that's just a popular myth. The company that invented it simply made up the name, without it standing for anything in particular.
