D.C. is short for District of Columbia. It is not a US state. It is a special piece of land set aside to hold the US capital city, Washington. When people write Washington, D.C., they mean that capital, not the state of Washington far away in the north-west — two different places, easy to mix up. Americans often just say “D.C.” for the capital area: the government buildings, the city, and the land around it. You will see it on addresses, news, and maps. Though actually, D.C. by itself can mean other things too (direct current in science; DC Comics). After Washington, or as a place, it means this district.
