Cyprus is a large island in the east Mediterranean Sea, south of Turkey and west of Syria. Its capital is . Population figures in school dictionaries are often from one year — 1,155,403 in 2014 — which is a tidy snapshot, not “how many people live there today.” In 1974 Turkey invaded the north, and the island has been divided since then. Greek live mainly in the southern two thirds; Turkish live mainly in the northern third. Since 1983 the area held by the has called itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Most countries do not recognise that north as a separate country; the south is the Republic of Cyprus and is in the European Union. English puts the stress on the first part: SY-prus. Though actually, everyday talk on the island is messier than “Greek south, Turkish north”: cities, families, and older villages do not always match the line on the map.
