A Cypriot is a person from Cyprus, a large island in the east Mediterranean Sea. We also use Cypriot as an adjective: Cypriot food, a Cypriot passport, a Cypriot village. The capital of the island is . About a million people live there; older books still print an exact 2014 count, but that number is a snapshot, not a living census. Since Turkey invaded the north in 1974 — that is, entered with military force — the island has been divided. Greek Cypriots live mainly in the southern two thirds; Turkish Cypriots live mainly in the northern third. Since 1983 the north has called itself a separate state (the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus), but most of the world does not treat it as one. When the split matters, people say Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot, not just Cypriot. Though actually, many families on both sides still talk about one island, and the story is older and more tangled than a short map.
組成From Ancient Greek Κυπριώτης (Kupriṓtēs, “Cypriot”). By the pieces you can still see: Cypr(us) + -iot, a suffix that makes “a person from that place.”
