A cybersquatter is a person who officially registers an internet domain name that belongs, in ordinary life, to a company or a famous person they do not work for — and then tries to sell that name to them for a high price. The trick only works because a domain name is first-come, first-served at the registry, not a moral right. The word is unfriendly: it paints the person as someone camping on land that is not theirs. News, law, and business people use it; it is not playground English. Though actually, buying a name you honestly like is not the same thing; the sting in this word is the plan to ransom a name that clearly points to someone else.
