Cyberlaw is the law about the internet: what you may do there, what you must not do, and who is responsible when something goes wrong. It is not one single rule with that name. It is a whole area — privacy, copyright, shopping online, hate speech, and crime that happens through computers. Lawyers, news writers, and universities use the word; everyday people more often say internet law, or they just name the problem. Though actually, a lot of cyberlaw is old law wearing new clothes: rules about letters, contracts, and theft, now applied to messages and websites, plus some newer rules made just for computers.

組成From cyber- + law. cyber- comes through cybernetic from Ancient Greek kubernētikós (about steering). law is the ordinary English word for a country’s rules.
