    We put cum between two nouns to show that one thing does two jobs at once. A kitchen-cum-dining-room is one room that is both a kitchen and a place to eat. A writer-cum-teacher is one person who and also teaches. English borrowed the word from Latin, where it meant "with". You will mostly meet it in writing; it feels a little formal or clever, and people do not often drop it into easy chat. Though actually, we almost never use it as a free joining word any more — we glue it between two nouns, usually with . Say it like come. The same spelling is also a very rude slang word for something sexual, so in school or work writing this "two jobs" sense is the one you want, and the two nouns plus the are what keep it clear.
