A cult is a small, often secretive group with strong, unusual beliefs, usually built around one powerful leader who controls members' lives — the word is normally used with a negative feeling, as a warning. Casually, 'cult film' or 'cult classic' means something that isn't mainstream but has a small group of very devoted fans.
