Cud is the food that a cow, sheep, goat, or similar animal has already swallowed and then brings back into its mouth to chew a second time. These animals eat grass quickly, store it, and later chew it slowly. That second chewing is called chewing the cud. English also uses chew the cud about people, in a loose, slightly old-fashioned way: to sit and turn a thought over, the way a cow turns grass. The word itself is farm and biology language; city speakers meet the idiom more often than the animal sense.

組成From Middle English code, cudde, coude, quede, quide, from Old English cudu, cwidu, from Proto-West Germanic *kwidu, from Proto-Germanic *kweduz (“resin”). Doublet of quid (“material for chewing”). Cognate with German Kitt and Sanskrit जतु (jatu, “lac, gum”).
