    Cuba is a country, and also a large island, in the Caribbean Sea. It is the biggest island in that sea. The capital is Havana. About eleven million people live there. From 1959 it was a one-party Communist state led by Fidel Castro; his Raúl later took over as president. People around the world know Cuba for rum, cigars, and music, and more visitors go there now than in the past. In English we say Cuba for the place, with a capital C. We do not say "the Cuba".

組成English borrowed the name from Spanish Cuba. The Spanish name is thought to come from a Taíno name for the island (old records give forms like cubaob or coabanabo, but that step is not certain). A town in Portugal is also called Cuba, and that name may have a different, possibly Arabic, story — that is not this Caribbean country.
