A crustacean is an animal with a hard shell on the outside, several pairs of legs, and a body made of parts that join together. Crabs, lobsters, , and shrimp are crustaceans. Most live in water, though actually some, like the you find under a flower pot, live on land. The hard covering is not like our skin: it is a suit of armour the animal has to shed when it grows. People often put all in one pile, but an oyster or a clam is not a crustacean — that is a different kind of animal with a softer body inside two shells. The word belongs in science class and in careful cooking talk; at a night market you are more likely to hear crab, shrimp, or lobster.
