    The crust is the hard, outer layer of something soft inside. Bread has a crust — the firm, sometimes skin around the soft inside. A pizza has a crust — the edge of the dough. The earth also has a crust — the solid outer layer we stand on, sitting on top of hot rock underneath. In each case, 'crust' means the same idea: a tough outside covering something different underneath.
