    Cruciform means shaped like a cross: one line cutting across another. Architects use it all the time. Many old cathedrals are cruciform — a long main hall with two arms sticking out, so that from above the building itself is a cross. You also meet the word in science, for a flower, a leaf, or a bone that sits in that shape. It is a formal, adjective; in everyday speech people say “cross-shaped” and are perfectly understood. It can be a noun as well (“a cruciform” meaning a cross-shaped thing), but that use is rarer. It does not name the religious object with Jesus on it; that is a . Cruciform only talks about the shape.
