A crosswind is a wind that blows across the way you are moving, not into your face and not from behind. If you are going forward, this wind comes from the left or the right and tries to push you sideways. Pilots care about it when a plane lands, because a strong crosswind can slide the plane off the painted line on the runway. Cyclists feel it on bridges and open roads. Drivers of tall trucks feel it too, because the side of the vehicle is like a sail. You will hear the word in airport weather and in sport, more than in ordinary city chat. Though actually, in daily life many people just say the wind is coming from the side and never use this word at all. It is a clear, slightly technical compound: not slang, not poetic, just a name for wind that crosses your path.
