A crosier (you will also see crozier) is the tall hooked staff a bishop carries. The top curves like a shepherd’s crook, and that is the point: the bishop is being shown as a shepherd of people. It is a church object, used in services and in pictures of bishops, not a walking stick for everyday life. The word first named the person who carried the staff, and then the staff itself. Though actually the thing looks like a shepherd’s hook, while the history of the name sits with “cross”: two old French words, one about carrying a cross, got mixed together, and later the name moved from the to the staff.

組成From Middle English. It first meant the staff-bearer, from a mix of Old French crocier (“bearer of a cross”) and croisier (“someone who has to do with a cross”), both going back to Latin crux, “cross.” Later the word moved from the person to the staff.
