A croissant is a curved breakfast bread. The shape looks like a young moon. Traditional ones taste of butter more than of sugar, and the inside is light and flaky — though actually many bakery croissants today are quite sweet, or filled with chocolate or cream, so the tidy idea “sweet bread” is only half the picture. The word is still French in English: we kept the French spelling and a French-sounding pronunciation. In cafés it is an everyday word.
