    A crescent is the curved shape of the moon when it's only partly lit — a thin, pointed curve like a smile or a banana shape, not a full circle. Because of that shape, "crescent" is also used for anything shaped that way, like a crescent-shaped street, or the crescent moon symbol you see on some flags.
