Pate is an old, slightly funny word for the top of your head — the crown, where hair grows, or where it used to. You almost only hear it now in set phrases, especially “bald pate,” in jokes, cartoons, and older writing. A doctor would not say “I hit my pate”; they would say head. It rhymes with late. Though actually, there is another word, pâté (a spread of mashed meat or fish), which looks almost the same if someone leaves the accent off. That is a different word with a different story; this pate is only the head.

組成From Middle English pate, of uncertain origin. Perhaps a shortened form of Old French patene or Medieval Latin patena, both from Latin patina (“pan, dish”). Alternatively, perhaps akin to Old Frisian pote (“skull”).
