    A cowpoke is a cowboy: someone who rides and looks after cattle, especially in the American West. The word sounds old, dusty, and a bit playful. You hear it in Western films and country songs more than in city talk. It is informal American English. Cowboy is the usual word; ranch hand is the plain work word. Though actually, the “poke” is not a poke on a phone. It comes from poking — pushing the cows along with a stick.
