1. 1

Cowhide is the skin of a cow, or the leather made from that skin. Boots, belts, bags, and saddles are often cowhide; it is thick and tough compared with many other leathers. Hide in this family means an animal’s skin, not “to go where nobody can see you.” In older English a strip of cowhide was also a whip, and to cowhide someone was to beat them with it — you still meet that verb in old stories, though people do not say it much in ordinary talk now. The everyday word is the material: a cowhide jacket, a length of cowhide. Rawhide is the same skin before it has been fully made into soft leather; once it is tanned and finished, we are usually happy to say cowhide or just leather.
