If a person is courtly, they are and very polite, in an old, elegant way — the manners people picture at a king's court, not in a noisy shop or classroom. You use it for how someone speaks, bows, or treats other people, and sometimes for a style of writing or love that feels formal and beautiful. It is not an everyday word; you meet it in books and careful descriptions more than in ordinary talk, and young people almost never call a friend courtly. Though actually, the court inside this word is the royal court, not the law court: a courtly man is not a man standing in front of a judge. There is also courtly love, an old European idea of noble, often hopeless love in poems. The adverb (to behave courtly) is rare now.
組成court (the king's court) + -ly (having that quality / in that way). From Middle English courtly.
