A woman who lives in the countryside rather than in a town or city. "She was a countrywoman through and through — up at five, hands in the soil." You should know this word has a second meaning, and the second one is actually more common in older books: a woman from your own country. "I met a countrywoman of mine in Paris" means I met a woman from my country. The two meanings look identical on the page, and only the sentence around them tells you which is meant. Usually the giveaway is of mine or of his — with those words attached, it's the "same country as me" meaning. Both uses feel old-fashioned now. Modern speakers say "a woman from the country" or "she's too." You'll meet countrywoman mostly in novels, in history writing, or in a slightly formal speech. The male form is countryman, and countryman is much the more common of the two — partly because the old phrase "friends, countrymen" is so famous. Plural: countrywomen.

組成country + -woman. The -woman ending is a modern pairing for -man, and woman itself is a squashed-together Old English wīfmann — wīf "woman" plus mann "person." So woman is literally "woman-person," and the wīf part survives today as wife.
