Happening in, or reaching, every part of a country. A countrywide search, a countrywide strike, prices rising countrywide. It works two ways with no change in form.
Happening in, or reaching, every part of a country發生在、或觸及一個國家的每個地方;a countrywide search全國性的搜索、a countrywide strike全國性的罷工、prices rising countrywide物價全國性地上漲;it works two ways with no change in form它有兩種用法,形式不變。
As an adjective it sits in front of a noun: a countrywide campaign. As an adverb it comes after the verb: the shops closed countrywide. That double life is normal for -wide words, and it trips up because most English words don't do both.
As an adjective當形容詞時 it sits in front of a noun它會放在名詞前面:a countrywide campaign全國性的活動;as an adverb當副詞時 it comes after the verb它放在動詞後面:the shops closed countrywide店家全國都關了;that double life這種雙重身分 is normal for -wide words對-wide結尾的字來說很正常,and而且 it trips learners up這會讓學習者搞混,because因為 most English words don't do both大多數英文字不會兩種都能做。
Nationwide is the far more common word — probably ten times more common — and means the same thing. So why does countrywide exist? Two small reasons.
Nationwidenationwide is the far more common word是遠遠比較常用的字——probably ten times more common可能常用十倍——and而且 means the same thing意思一樣;so那 why does countrywide exist為什麼還會有countrywide這個字?two small reasons有兩個小原因。
It's plainer, more neutral: nationwide can carry a flag with it, a feeling of one people, while countrywide just means the geography. And it's handy when "nation" would be politically awkward — writers covering places where people disagree about whether they are one nation often prefer countrywide.
It's plainer, more neutral它比較平實、比較中立:nationwidenationwide can carry a flag with it可能帶著一種國旗式的情感,a feeling of one people一種「我們是一個民族」的感覺,while而 countrywidecountrywide just means the geography只是單純講地理範圍;and而且 it's handy它很好用 when當「nation」這個字 "nation" would be politically awkward在政治上會顯得尷尬時——writers covering places where people disagree about whether they are one nation報導那些對於自己算不算同一個nation有爭議的地方的作者 often prefer countrywide通常會偏好用countrywide。
In everyday Taiwan English, though, you'll meet nationwide almost every time. British writing uses countrywide slightly more than American writing does. Written as one word — countrywide, no .
In everyday Taiwan English在台灣日常英文裡,though不過,you'll meet nationwide almost every time你幾乎每次都會遇到nationwide;British writing英式寫作 uses countrywide slightly more than American writing does用countrywide的頻率比美式寫作稍微高一點;written as one word寫成一個字——countrywidecountrywide,no hyphen不加連字號。
組成country + wide. The -wide part is the ordinary word wide, from Old English wīd, meaning "broad, extending far" — it became a way of saying "across the whole of." Country traces back to Latin contrā, "opposite," from a phrase for the land lying opposite the town.
