A councilwoman is a woman who is a member of the government of a city in the United States. She sits on the city council and helps decide local rules. Like , this is mainly US English. British English would more often call her a councillor. The word made clear space for women in a job that used to be talked about as if it were only for men. Though actually, some people now prefer council member for everyone, so they do not have to choose -man or -woman. You will still hear councilwoman a lot, and many women in the job use it happily.
