A couchette is a narrow bed on a night train (and sometimes a boat) that folds down from the wall, or a seat you can sleep on during a night journey. In Europe, a couchette carriage often has several bunks in one small compartment — cheaper and less private than a proper room with a door of your own. The word is borrowed from French, and British and European travel English still uses it; American English more often just says a bunk or a . It is not the sofa in your living room, though the two words are cousins.
