    A cottonwood is a tall North American tree. In late spring it drops seeds on little white that look like bits of cotton, and the air can fill with them as if it were snowing. It likes river banks and grows quickly. It is a kind of poplar, not the cotton plant that farmers grow for cloth. You will see the word in American stories, park names, and place names more than in British English.
