A cosmonaut is a person trained to travel in space. The job is the same as an astronaut’s. The difference is mostly whose word you are using: the United States said astronaut; the Soviet Union said cosmonaut, borrowed from Russian. English news still often says cosmonaut for Russian crew. Though actually, students sometimes think a cosmonaut does a different job, or flies a different kind of ship as a matter of English meaning. The English meaning is “space , in the Soviet / Russian naming tradition.” Other countries have used other labels in English-language news, but those are extra labels, not extra jobs.
