A corpus is a large collection of real writing or speech that people study to see how a language is actually used — researchers might build a corpus of newspaper articles or everyday conversations. It's mostly used by linguists, teachers, and researchers, not in everyday talk. It can also mean the whole body of work by one person, like 'the corpus of Shakespeare's plays.'
