A coronation is the big, official ceremony in which someone is made king or queen. In Britain that usually means a church service, a crown placed on the person's head, and a lot of public show. Though actually, the person may already have become king or queen the moment the last ruler died; the coronation is the ceremony that shows it to the country, sometimes months later. It is a formal word. You do not use it for winning a sports cup, except as a joke or in a newspaper stretching the word. It is built from the old verb meaning “to crown” plus -ation, the act or ceremony of doing it.
