Cornwall is a county in the far south-west of England, a long piece of land that sticks out into the sea. People go there on holiday for the beaches, the cliffs, and the surfing — the waves on the north coast are famous. It used to have a lot of tin mines; most of those mines are quiet now, but you still see the old stone engine houses on the hills. Land's End, the most westerly point of mainland England, is in Cornwall, and so are the Isles of Scilly, a group of small islands off the tip. You always write it with a capital C, because it is a place. People from Cornwall are Cornish, and there is a Cornish language that some people still speak. Though actually, the name is not from the English word corn. It comes from an old Celtic word for a horn — the land is shaped like a horn — plus an Old English word wealh, 'foreigner' or 'stranger', the same piece you meet in Wales and Welsh.
