    A corncrake is a shy brown bird of and long grass, mainly in Europe. You are much more likely to hear it than to see it. It makes a loud, dry, repeated cry, like two sticks rasping together, often at night. Birdwatchers use the word more than everyday speakers; it is a nature word, a little specialist. The corn in the name is about the fields it lives in, not about the bird eating corn.
