If a joke or a film is cornball, it is extremely simple, old-fashioned, and a bit silly — the sweet joke a tells, or a love story that tries too hard. It is informal American English. You can call the humour cornball, and you can also call a person a cornball if they are like that. It is not a kind word, but it is usually teasing rather than cruel. Though actually, some people like cornball things on purpose; they know they are silly and enjoy them anyway. Corny is a close cousin and is more common.
