Cordage means rope and cord taken as a group, especially all the rope on a ship. Walk around an old sailing boat and the lines that hold the sails, tie the boat to the dock, and lift heavy things are its cordage. People who do not work on boats almost never say this word. They just say rope. On a ship, though, sailors are picky about words, and cordage is the tidy cover-all for that whole collection. You do not count it. You do not say a cordage, the way you do not say a furniture. You say the cordage, meaning all of it together. You will meet it in sea books and in talk among people who work with boats; it sounds a little technical, a little old, not like kitchen English. It came into English from French cordage, built on the French word for a cord.
