Copulation is the act of having sex — the noun that matches . Like the verb, it lives in biology, medicine, and formal writing, not in ordinary conversation. A paper might describe courtship, then copulation, then the nest. A doctor might need a precise noun that is not slang. Though actually, students sometimes think this is only an animal word; it can be used of people, but then it sounds like a clinic, not a feeling. The Latin idea was simply joining. English kept the joining and made it specific.
