Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark. It sits in the east of the country, on the water. It is a port — ships come and go — and also a centre of industry and business. English speakers often know it for one statue in the harbour: the Little Mermaid, from the old children’s story. Though actually the city is much more than that one photo: it is where the country is run from, and where a lot of Danish work and traffic meet the sea. The English name came from Low German Kopenhagen, a piece-by-piece copy (perhaps later twisted a little by how people heard it) of Danish København. That Danish name is built like “merchant’s harbour”: haven is a harbour, and the other half is related to an old word for a trader, chapman.
