    Contradistinction is a rather formal word for putting two things side by side so you can see how they are not the same. You almost always meet it in the phrase in contradistinction to, meaning “in contrast to” or “as opposed to.” A teacher might say that spoken English, in contradistinction to written English, uses a lot of short forms. It does not mean a fight between two claims (that is contradiction). It is closer to contrast: you are drawing a line so the difference shows. The word is .
