A contraceptive is a drug, object, or method used to stop a pregnancy from starting when two people have sex. As a noun it is the thing itself: the pill, a condom, an , an injection, and so on. As an adjective it describes something that does that job: contraceptive pills, contraceptive advice. In everyday talk people often name the method (the pill, a condom) rather than say contraceptive, which sounds a little more medical or official. It is not the same as contraception: that is the practice; this is what you use. And it is not a medicine for ending a pregnancy that has already begun.
