    If two things are contiguous, they sit next to each other and touch, or they make one block with no hole in the middle. The contiguous United States means the 48 states that all join together on the mainland — not Alaska and not Hawaii, because those do not touch the rest. Fields can be contiguous. Rooms can be contiguous. Two stretches of time can be contiguous if one starts when the other stops. Though actually, students often mix this up with continuous. Continuous means “going on without stopping,” like a continuous noise. Contiguous means “touching / next door.” It is a formal, textbook adjective. You will see it in geography, science, and law more than in friendly chat.
