The spreading of a disease from one person to another through touch, air, or close contact. Doctors and news reports use this word for the disease itself spreading through a group of people, not just for one person being sick. It is also used more loosely for things that are not diseases but spread the same fast, catching way — fear, panic, or financial trouble can all be called a 'contagion' when they jump from person to person or company to company.
