When you do something contemptuously, you do it in a way that shows you think someone or something deserves no respect. You might laugh contemptuously, wave someone away contemptuously, or speak contemptuously of their work. It is the adverb of contemptuous, and it has the same formal colour. Everyday English often just describes the action: she looked at him as if he were nothing. Though actually the -ly belongs on the showing, not on the thing being judged. He spoke contemptuously — that is his way of speaking. The idea he attacked might be — not worthy of respect. You will meet this adverb in novels and news more than in casual talk.
