When you do something contemptuously, you do it in a way that shows you think someone or something deserves no respect. You might laugh contemptuously, wave someone away contemptuously, or speak contemptuously of their work. It is the adverb of contemptuous, and it has the same formal colour. Everyday English often just describes the action: she looked at him as if he were nothing. Though actually the -ly belongs on the showing, not on the thing being judged.
