Not deserving any respect at all — so low, mean, or shameful that people are right to look down on it. You can call an action contemptible, or a person, or a cheap trick. It is a strong, rather formal word, a little old-fashioned in daily speech. People more often say that's so low, that's shameful, or that's disgusting. Though actually it names the thing that should be looked down on. That is the other direction from contemptuous, which names the look or voice of the person who is doing the looking-down. A contemptible lie; a contemptuous smile. You meet contemptible in writing and in moral judgment more than in light conversation.
組成From Middle English contemptible, from Latin contemptibilis. By surface analysis, contempt (the feeling of no respect) + -ible (able to receive that feeling — worthy of it).
